Surprises in Luke- Daily Reading, Luke 24

v52 says it all: what 'great joy'!!

Surprises in Luke- Daily Reading, Luke 23

Herod is just so aweful (v8, cf 9:9 and 13:31). It's surprising how short the story of Jesus' death is in v44-46.  What were the women thinking as they watched in v49?

Surprises in Luke- Daily Reading, Luke 22

It's interesting that although 'Satan entered Judas' in v3, he is still seen as responsible in v22 and v48 and 6:16. Imagine the discussion in v23. We see the faility of the other disciples too (cf v24 with 9:46) and after Peter disowns Jesus, Jesus is really on his own.

Surprises in Luke- Daily Reading, Luke 21

Jesus teaches so much about the danger of the love of money (6:24, 8:14, 9:25, 12:13-21, 15:13, 16:25, 18:24-25).  Do I only give 'out of my wealth' (v4)?

Surprises in Luke- Daily Reading, Luke 20

No-one can take on Jesus (v8, v19, v26, v40). Lord please save me from hypocrisy (v45-47, cf 11:39-44).

Surprises in Luke- Daily Reading, Luke 19

I wonder if there was anyone at the temple in v47, who had heard Jesus teaching when he was 12 (cf 2:49). Do I 'hang' on Jesus' words (v48)?

Surprises in Luke- Daily Reading, Luke 14

There seems a continual challenge about our families in v20 and v26 (cf 5:11,  8:19-21, 9:57-62, 10:42, 11:27-28, 18:29-30). What does it look like in 21C?

Surprises in Luke- Daily Reading, Luke 13

No wonder Jesus is getting such oppostion in v17 and yet we see his longing in v34-35 (cf 19:41).

Surprises in Luke- Daily Reading, Luke 12

Imagine the crowd 'trampling on one another' in v1. I love the imagery Jesus uses in v6-7 and v22-34 (sparrows, ravens, lilies, flock).

Surprises in Luke- Daily Reading, Luke 11

It's interesting that in 6:12 Jesus prayed all night, yet when asked how to pray, he responds with content not amount (v1-4). Imagine the mood at the dinner party in v37-52: see v45.

Surprises in Luke- Daily Reading, Luke 10

There's more surprises throughout this chapter. It's not the usual call into ministry in v3. There's a lovely insight into joy (v17-23): 'rejoice that your names are written in heaven'. Note the cliff hanger in v37: what did the expert of the law go and do? What did Mary choose in v42?

Surprises in Luke- Daily Reading, Luke 9

This chapter feels sobre (v5, v21-27, v41, v44, v52, v57-62) as we see the cost of following Jesus as he 'resolutely set out for Jerusalem' (v51): how do we live out v57-62? And there's lots of surprises. Without a portable PA, how did Jesus speak to such large crowds (v11, v14)? Why such a strict warning in v21 and were the 3 disciples meant to be silent in v36?  Why an almost humorous picture of Peter in v32-33? Why was understanding hidden from the disciples in v45? Could the disciples have called down fire from heaven in v54?

Surprises in Luke- Daily Reading, Luke 8

What a lovely picture of partnership in v1-3: those women understood 7:47. The demon-possessed man sounds scary (v27,-29), so why are the people afraid in v35-37?

Surprises in Luke- Daily Reading, Luke 7

This chapter makes me cry. Jesus is clearly the 'one who was to come' (v19-20; Is 35:1-10, Ps 146).  But what a personal insight in v13 'his heart went out to her and he said 'Don't cry'.' And what a challenge in v47: do I love much because I have been forgiven much?

Surprises in Luke- Daily Reading, Luke 6

Imagine seeing the healing of the hand in v10, and yet the Jewish leaders were 'furious' (v11).
